Chapter 8

The two girls were close enough in size to Amber that, once they were back at the safe house, they could both get dressed. Meanwhile, Aldon iced his head and Margot tried her best to explain to Amber what had gone down at Puss and Boots.

When she was done, Amber asked, “So, am I off the hook?”

Margot shrugged. “I can’t say for certain he believed me.”

“That's good.”

“It is?”

“When all this is over, I’m really going to miss you guys. I’d hate if you left me now.”

“We’re committed through the trial,” Aldon said.

“Good. Well, it sounds like that wig might have saved your life, Margot.”

“I think it did. The bad news is we haven’t been as good at this as we thought.”

“We haven’t? The decoy worked perfectly.”

“No, it didn’t. The idea was to fool them and flush them out. We may have fooled them, but we didn’t flush them out. They tailed us without us having a clue.”

“She’s right,” Aldon added, “the whole decoy thing is burned too. They won’t fall for it twice.”

“Which means we have people on us good enough to follow us without our knowledge who are going to be following us back here,” Radcliff said.

“That’s the situation.”

“I guess we’ll be earning our money for the next week or so,” Margot said as she found the bottle of Maker’s Mark Radcliff had picked up just for her and poured a double over ice.

“I could plead guilty, save everybody some trouble,” Amber said.

“Is that what your lawyer recommends?” Margot asked.

“No, he thinks we have a real shot.”

“Then don’t. We’ll figure this out.”

“Maybe if you had, like, two more decoys?”

They all looked to see that Demi and Tasha, fully dressed, had entered the room.

“Sorry, I was listening,” Demi said.

“I’m not sure bringing two more people with targets on their backs will help,” Margot told her.

“Yeah, I guess you have a point.”

“If Dennis is in custody, though, that target comes off your back,” Aldon told her. “So if you know where to find him, the time to tell us is now.”

“I wish I could.”

Aldon looked over at Tasha. “How about you?”

“I don’t know where he is.”

Aldon shook his head and put his hand up against the lump on his head. “Looks like we went through all that for nothing.”

“Unless the gangster believed Margot,” Amber said.

“Okay, there is that but still, we almost got killed.”

“I guess I could text him and ask,” Tasha suggested. “He wanted to meet up later so I could just say yes and tell you where.”

“You’ve been talking to him?” Demi asked, surprised.

“Yeah, or texting. He hasn’t texted you?”

“No.”

“Huh.”

“I guess we know who his favorite is,” Demi said with a frown.

“Don’t be so hard on yourself. He’s not exactly a prime catch. Plus, I was selling his drugs. He probably just wants the money.”

“You were selling his drugs? I was selling his drugs.”

Tasha shrugged. “He said you quit.”

“I did but…”

“You thought he’d stop just because you did?”

Demi looked like she had a lot to say about that but kept it to herself.
